Guardians of the Amazon: how Inga women lead the defense of their territory

On March 14, 2025 Amazon Watch published an interview with the President of ACIMVIP on the role of Inga women in defending the territory. She stresses that women are at the forefront of resistance to extractive industries; that they run the chagras, a farming system that grows diverse, mutually beneficial plants (cassava, potato and medicinal plants) and sustains biodiversity; and that they serve as Wasikamas, watching over the territory against illegal intruders. Amazon Watch has accompanied ACIMVIP since 2023. On April 2, 2025 the Amazon Watch team met with the community at Iuiai Wasi (photographic record of the Secretariat).
